Zakynthos Town is the capital of the island. It is located on the east coast, facing the Peloponnese with daily ferries between the harbor and the mainland. An earthquake in 1953 destroyed most of the Venetian buildings, but the city was rebuilt as close to the original as possiible. Alexander Roma is the central high street, filled with bustling shops. Also worth seeing are the Museums of Post Byzantine Art, of Solomos, and the Roma mansion. The Church of Sain Dionysis with its impressive bell tower is also a must-see. The capital is full of restaurants, cafes and places to stay – and truly offers a traditional island experience.
