The church of Panagia Krimniotissa ( Samothrace ) is perched above the Pachia Ammos beach. It offers an incredible view of the Aegean. The church has a great tale: An icon was thrown into the sea to save it from looting. Around 1700, a boat sailing near the island in a storm, found the icon in the sea and took it aboard. The storm calmed, and that night, the Virgin Mary appeared to the captain and told him to go to Samothrace. The priest put the icon in a church, but every morning, the icon was gone. The islanders found it every day on the rock where the church now stands.
