    Palaiopoli Samothrace

Sanctuary of the Great Gods / Temple Complex Samothrace Greece

Sanctuary of the Great Gods, also known as Temple Complex is north of the capital town and are the ruins of the ancient city where the Kabeirian Mysteries took place. There is no precise information about the mysteries because those involved were not allowed to talk bout the ceremonies preformed, but it is rumored to have been a place to ask the gods for life after death. The ruins at Palaiopoli are extensive and amazing – allow a couple of hours to see it all. This site is where the winged statue, Nike of Samothrace was found in 1863. Today the statue is housed in the Louvre in Paris. There is a small museum at the site with a replica of the statue.
