In the southern part of the Rhodopi Mountains in Thrace there is a path of the river formed by extensive continuous loops, creating a stunning location and a beautiful lush landscape which is characterized since 1977 as an “Aesthetic Forest” with a total area of 24.000 acres, accessible only by train or on foot. It is 27 km from Xanthi and 205 km from Thessaloniki. It is a very important ecosystem with a remarkable flora and fauna, protected by the International Ramsar Convention and is part of the Natura 2000 Network. The rocks on the cliffs, eroded by the continuous flow of the waters of the river, have created numerous caves, some of them visible from the road with amazing stalactites and stalagmites. Crystal water from natural springs, benches and tables with shelters offer a place to rest.
