The Monastery of Megalo Meteoro is located in Thessaly, north of Trikala. Of the monasteries in the area, this one is the biggest and perched highest as well. Built between 1356 to 1372 by Agios (Saint) Athanasios, a monk from Athos, at a height of 631 meters above the floor of the valley, the monastery is one of the most breathtaking sights in all of Greece. The 2nd successor of the monastery, Ioasaf Palaiologos, added on to it in 1552. In the middle of the 16th century, more than 300 monks lived here, only reachable by a rope ladder. Today, you can reach the entrance of the monastery by climbing over 400 rough and uneven stairs.
