    Leros Kastro Medieval Castle

Kastro ( Medieval Castle ) Leros Island

The medieval Castle of Leros, also called Kastro of Panagia ( Virgin Mary ) or of Panteli, was built in the 11th century by the Byzantine emperor Alexios Komninos. The castle was occupied by the Knights of Rhodes in the 13th century who reinforced it with more walls and turrets, and later in the 15 century it was taken over by the Turks. The inhabitants of the island used it as a refuge from pirate raids. It is located on Apittiki Hill above the towns of Agia Marina, Platanos and Panteli, with spectacular views across the area and the Aegean.
