Lefkada Greece

Lefkada in Greece, also called Lefkas, is the fourth largest island in the Ionian Sea ( area of 302.5 m2 - population of 22,879 inhabitants ) and it is the only one with road access, because it is only separated from Aitoloakaranania through the Strait of Drepanos. The climate is mediterranean with hot humid summers and cold winters. There are many attractions in the area such as the medieval castle at the entrance of the capital city, which was built by the Venetian Giovanni Orsini in the 14th century. The fortress got its name from the church of Agia Mavra which was located in the same position. Many famous and popular writers were born in Leukada such as Angelos Sikelianos, Aristotelis Valaoritis and Lefcadios Hearn. Lefkas is a natural attraction with beautiful seaside and mountainous villages, dozens of caves, waterfalls and springs. There are amazing beaches with turquoise waters which are among the most beautiful in the entire Mediterranean. Porto Katsiki, Egremni, Gialos are some examples. Main sources of wealth is tourism, oil, viticulture and fishing. In recent years, various and modern tourist infrastructure have been build. The traditional dishes of local cuisine is bourdeto, codfish bianco, maridopitta, frygadeli and various pies.
