    Lake Karla Volos Magnesia Thessaly

Lake Karla is a former lake in Thessaly, almost 25 km from Volos. The original lake was 180 to 195.000 acres, 4-5 meters deep, and its bird and fish fauna was very rich. It was completely drained in 1962 to gain land for agriculture. However, it was found that the impact on the second largest wetland in Greece and the ecosystem of the area was greater than the benefit offered by its drainage, so in 2009 an attempt to recreate the lake began, which will be about 38.000 acres and provide a partial restoration of flora and fauna.
