Ios town, the island's capital charms visitors with its authentic beauty and is built on the hill above Gialo, the island’s harbor, which is 2 km away. It is a picturesque town that wins over every traveler, classified as a heritage site with cobbled streets, old neighborhoods with small white houses, and built around many churches and chapels. Throughout the island there are about 365 churches, many of which are in the capital town. At the top of the hill is the church of Agios Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. In the same area there are the ruins of a medieval castle, dating from the mid 13th century and below it, between the cliffs, stands the church of Panagia Gremiotissa. At the eastern end of Chora, there are windmills, 12 in total – Ios’ picturesque mills are among the most beautiful sights on the island.
