Matala ( Crete ) became world famous in the 70's when hippies swarmed the area and lived in the famous caves. This is an area of unique and special beauty that lies 67 km southwest of Heraklion. The area has actually been inhabited since prehistoric times, it is said that the caves were homes prehistoric people. Inside a cave are tombs dating back to the Roman era. In antiquity Matala and the neighboring village Komo represented the port of Phaistos. Archaeological excavations have brought to light ancient shipwrecks. Today Matala is one of the places with the most traffic of Heraklion.
