Malia ( Crete ) is located 34km east of Heraklion, on the road to Agios Nikolaos. The main road seems to divide the city in two: the old town at the foot of Mount Selena and the newer part of town near the shoreline. The beach with its long sandy beach attracts many visitors. It is organized and ideal for water sports. Malia is an important archaeological site as the Minoan palace there was built during the same period as Knossos. It occupies an area of 12,000 sq. metres, and ruins of other houses have been excavated around the palace.
