Crete Greece

Crete ( Greece ) is the largest island in the country and the fifth one in the Mediterranean Sea. It is located on the south Aegean Sea with a surface area of 8.336 km2 and a coastline of over 1.000 km. It is divided in four regional sections, Chania, Rethymno, Heraklio and Lasithi. The area is mountainous with three high mountain ranges crossing from west to east, forming many fertile plateaus, numerous gorges, waterfalls and lakes. It has a very rich flora and fauna and many environmentally protected areas. A large number of islands and islets surround the coasts and many of them are popular attractions for the visitors. There is also the archeological site of Minoan civilization which is one of the most important in the world. Crete is known for Mantinades poetry, the indigenous dances, the local traditions and customs and the excellent local cuisine. There are two international airports. The first one is located in the capital town, Heraklion, the second in Chania and there is a smaller in Sitia. There are many ferries schedules that serves the island.
