Balos ( Crete ) is the famous lagoon, located approximately 56km northwest of Chania. It is a shallow sandy beach formed between the Cape Gramvousa and the smaller Tigani cape. It is famous for its turquoise waters, wild natural beauty and wonderful exotic landscape. In summer the beach is flooded daily by thousands of visitors who arrive mostly by boat from Kissamos. The lagoon has white sand and exotic whites, bright greeny-blues and turquoise waters. The sea is very shallow and warm, ideal for young children. In many places the sand has a lovely pink color that comes from millions of broken shells. The lagoon and the surrounding area are part of the Natura protection programme, with rare species of flora and fauna. There are falcons shags and cormorants nesting in the caves.
