Iasmos Bridge Greece Thrace

The Iasmos bridge( Greece ) is the largest of the stone Byzantine bridges in Thrace. It is over the Kompsatos River, between Iasmos and Polianthos villages, 27 km away from Xanthi. The bridge is five bowed, but part of it was destroyed (possibly in the Civil War). If it were whole, the bridge would be about 70 m long. The Iasmos Bridge is actually post-Byzantine, but built on the foundations of an older one from the 2nd century BC. There are many of these beautiful stone Byzantine bridges nearby: three more on the Kompsatos River and four more in the general area.
