Avdira ( Greece ) is the home of many great Greek philosophers, such as Demokritus and Protagoras and a very important ancient town, founded in the 7th century BC. Abdera is located on the coast of Thrace, 21 km from Xanthi. The remarkable ancient town has big walls, an acropolis, two ports, a theater and houses arranged in blocks. The findings of the excavation are located in the town's archaeological museum. At the seaside of the town there are beautiful sandy organized beaches with crystal clear waters. Every summer, at the end of July the “Democritus” cultural events are held, with exhibitions, theatrical performances, sports events and delicious local dishes are prepared by the housewives of the area.
