Alonissos Old Town, or Chora, used to be the capital of the island until an earthquake in 1965 destroyed the village and made most inhabitants to move to present capital, Patitiri (4 km away). Now the village has been restored to its old beauty. The old part of it, is an idyllic and calm place with whitewashed old houses, narrow paved streets and stairs leading to the top of the hill. Some parts of the old Byzantine walls restored by the Venetians to fortify the city have survived the passing of time. The church of Agios Andreas is home to the International Academy of Homeopathics. This village can be reached by local bus or through a delightful donkey walk starting at Patitiri, the present day capital.
