Alexandroupolis ( Greece ), in Thrace, is an important commercial port of the country. It is 346 km from Thessaloniki and 40 km from the border of Turkey. Some of the remarkable sights are the famous lighthouse which is the symbol of the city, and museums such as the Ethnological and the Historical Museum. There are plenty of hotels for visitors and 25 km sandy or rocky coastline for swimming. Most beaches around Alexandroupoli have been awarded the Blue Flag for cleanliness, are well organized and ideal for children because of the shallow water. The city is a great place as a base for excursions to the National Park and the ancient sites of Evros.
